went to Oban for the Royal Mod in Oct
of 2003. Arrived in
horrendous wind and rain but as each day passed (arrived on
Wed, Mod was that Friday through following Saturday morn,
total of 11 days) the weather improved. Went out to Mull and
Iona and had such a lovely day for it. The Mod was
terrific!! The week just improved as the sun shone and the
wind let up. By Wed it was so nice but by Friday it was
SPECTACULAR! The most gorgeous weather for walking all over
town and enjoying the great music that
is every where during the Mod. Anyone that loves music, be
it modern or traditional, should hear all the lovely voices
young and old. There is so much music that is is hard to get
to all of it and I worried about what I might miss!
I thought Oban was a lovely town! Got a chance to go
up to McCaig's Tower on a misty afternoon and while out on
the little observation platform the sun came out and the
rays shooting through the clouds as they dispersed was
amazing! A fantastic sight and got many really great photos.
Lots of tourists still in October and I had a good
time chatting with
them on the ferry to Mull. Everyone is friendly and helpful.
A great place to visit and spend time.

If you go to Oban
there is a cafe/restaurant on the sea front called McTavishes
which provides the basic meal and upstairs there is Scottish
entertainment on every evening just a couple of doors along is
another restaurant which boasts good views over the bay and it
is upstairs below holiday apartments. This is very nice quiet
and peaceful and nice food, good service. The view over the
bay is outstanding. There are many reasonably priced hotels
and bed and breakfast accommodation but for the cost cutting
traveller the Youth Hostel is in a very good position on the
front of the bay. There is family accommodation which is great
as it is in a cottage at the back of the hostel. Hostel's
nowadays have all the facilities but the placement of this one
is spectacular. For the traveller who likes shoes, well Oban
is the place, there is one good shoe shop on the sea front but
up a side street there is a foot warehouse/shop type and it
says it has 10,000 pairs of shoes and you are sure to love
this shop if you like shoes. The shoes are slight seconds and
are slightly cheaper than normal stock but go and see for
yourself. You will love it.
Frequently during the day the ferries go
in and out and there are the occasional cruise ships which
call in. The harbour is very interesting day or evening. Oban
has something for everyone.

Last summer I was in Oban. I went to McCaig's Tower and the
view was spectacular. You can see the boats coming and going. The Scottish entertainment
was very good as well and the people very friendly. Would recommend Oban to anyone who has
never been or if you have go back.
