My Family take a short holiday in the Scottish Highlands as often as we can every year. We like to go to Ardnamurchan.. which is the most western part of the Scottish mainland. There is a ferry there which takes you to Tobermory on the island of Mull... it's a great area to get away from all the hussle and tussle of city life.

Like, I guess, the majority of visitors to this beautiful island we took the ferry from Oban and it was not the best experience of our trip. Luckily we have decided not to buy a return ticket but decide near the end of our stay which way to leave the island. Thanks to the wonderful lady from Caledonian MacBayne who told us we had choices. We decided, in the end to take the ferry from Tobermory to Kilkohan (hope that's the correct spelling) and that made up for the poor crossing from Oban. What an experience. The most fantastic sea journey in Britain without a doubt. The journey upcountry also contained the most marvellous scenery. Unfortunately we missed the ferry to the mainland only to discover that we were on the mainland. Thanks to the wonderful people at the little pub by the ferry across the loch. We couldn't stay, they were full and no surprise if the meal we had was anything to go by.
If anyone knows the name we would like to hear it as we will stay there on our next trip.
The message to other travellers, however, is ignore Oban, travel northward to Fort William and cross by the small car ferry. Take the road, a long and beautiful one to Kilkhohan and enjoy the car ferry journey of a lifetime. If you are in a hurry I believe there is a third ferry from Loch Alin and this is the cheapest route of all.
