The pound is divided into 100 pennies. The coins used are 1p, 2p, 5p, 10p, 20p, 50p, £1 and £2. The notes used are £5, £10, £20, £50 and £100 in Scotland you also get a £1 note.

Banks

Scotland has it's own banks, The Royal Bank of Scotland, the Bank of Scotland and the Clydesdale Bank all of which issue their own notes which circulate alongside Bank of England notes.

Q. What are the opening hours for banks in Scotland.

Banks in Scotland open Monday to Friday between 9/10am and close 4/5pm but some may open later on a Thursday. A few banks open on Saturday mornings. Banks in remote areas will have sorter opening times and many will only be open a few days a week. Some of the remote Islands do not have banks and are served once or twice a week by a mobile bank.

Q. Can I use my credit card in Scotland.

Most larger shops, stores, hotels and restaurants in Scotland will accept all major credit cards. It is advisable to carry some British money with you as well. A lot of the smaller accommodation establishments such as B&Bs are unlikely to accept credit cards, this also applies to other small businesses. Access, Mastercard and Visa are the most commonly acceptable credit cards, followed by American Express and Diners Club.

Q. Is the currency for Scotland the same as England.

Scottish banks issue their own bank notes for all denominations which differ from English notes, the Scottish notes may not always be accepted in some parts of England. Scotland issue a £1 note which few places in England will accept, you are best to change £1 notes for £1 coins before you leave Scotland. All  English notes and coins are accepted in Scotland.
