National Papers

The most popular newspaper in Scotland is the Daily Record which is circulated widely. For overall national news the best newspaper is The Scotsman, it has good coverage of both Scottish and UK news and foreign news as well as material on the arts and business. The Glasgow Herald is another popular newspaper but does not quite have national status yet. The most popular Sunday paper is the Sunday Post.

Local Papers

Some of the larger towns and cities have daily local papers which carry mostly local and some national news. Other towns have local weekly's which are mostly based on local news and events and usually locally informative.

The cities have daily evening papers which usually have good guides on entertainment, arts, theatre and sport.

Magazines

Scotland is poorly served by magazines, Radical Scotland is the main current affairs magazine and it's monthly. The Edinburgh Review is a literary review of consistent quality. English weeklies are widely available.

Radio

Radio in Scotland is of a high quality, Radio Scotland is the main BBC radio service, other national BBC radio stations also operate in Scotland, such as Radio 1 a general pop station with national news. Radio 2 concentrates on light entertainment and sport. Radio 3 is much the same as radio 2. Radio 4  is a mixture of news, current affairs and light entertainment. Most areas in Scotland carry their own local station usually playing general pop music with national and local news as well as traffic reports every half hour.

Television

Television in Scotland is excellent, the five main stations are BBC1 a general TV station covering a full spectrum of programs with no commercial breaks in-between. BBC2 tends to cater for not so popular interest, this station is also commercial free. STV is a commercial station and is a good alternative to BBC1, this station has more local broadcasts on it. Ch4 is a fairly new comer and reorganise the existence of a more specialist audiences. CH5 is the newest station of them all, it has only been running a few years and it is already regarded as good as BBC1 and ITV.

In recent years satellite and cable has become more popular giving the viewer more choice, but I have still to come across a station that comes even close to the quality of broadcasting that we have been used to for so many years from the BBC, STV, CH4 and CH5.
