It is
sensible to take out travel insurance before travelling, to cover cancellation or
curtailment of your holiday, theft or loss of money and possessions, and the cost of any
medical treatment. If your country has a reciprocal medical arrangement with the UK you
can obtain free treatment under the National Health Service. Australia, New Zealand and
everywhere in the European Union (EU) has this arrangement. North American health plans,
and student identity cards may give some protection against incurred costs, but always
check the small print. If you want to drive a car in Scotland, it is advisable to take out
fully comprehensive insurance. You must carry a valid drivers licence. If you are
not an EU citizen, you must have an international drivers licence, available through
the AAA for those in the US.
