Clan Musenms & Centres

 

With the ever increasing interest in Scotland's Highland Heritage, there are a large number of clan societies, many based overseas. Visitors to Scotland, whether or not they have particular clan associations, are made welcome at a number of clan museums.


The Clan Donald Centre, Armdadale Castle, Perthshire. Tells the story of the Clan Donald and their power as Lords of the Isles, also beautiful woodland walks, an audio-visual theatre and other visitor facilities.

The Clan Donnachaidh Museum, Calvine, Perthshire has relics of the 1715 and '45 Jacobite uprisings.

The Clan MacPherson Museum, Newtonmore (South of Aviemore) contains relics of the MacPherson chiefs and other important families, a letter from Bonnie Prince Charlie and other clan artefacts.

The Menzies Clan Society has a museum in Castle Menzies at Weem, nr Aberfeld, Perthshire

Clan Cameron have a museum in a reconstructed 17th century croft house near Spean Bridge which includes memorabilia of Bonnie Prince Charlie.

In Caithness, the Old Parish Church of Latheron, dating from 1735 is now the Clan Gunn Heritage Centre and Museum. At the opposite end of Scotland, in Kintyre, the Clan Macalister Centre is at Glenbarr Abbey near Campbeltown.

The Clan Ross have a centre based at Tain Museum, in Easter Ross, while only a little further north, Dunrobin Castle has a Clan Sutherland room. Another important and historic centre is at Finlaggan, on the island of Islay, where the ancient seat of Clan Donald now has interpretation facilities.

Blair, Dunvegan and Inveraray are all popular castles to visit and also the seats of clan chiefs.

Scotland's Clan Tartan Centre, 70-74 Bangor Road, Leith, Edinburgh contains a library, an audio-visual display and an extensive range of tartans, and has computerised facilities for the tracing of clan links.
