DIRLETON CASTLE

This massive ruin stands on a rock in attractive gardens that have a beehive doocot and Bowling Green. Built by the De Vaux family around 1225, it was sieged in 1298 by Edward I. Extended by the Halyburtons and Ruthvens, it was abandoned in 1650 following the attack by General Monk. The castle was taken into state care and gifted to the National Trust by B.C.E. Brooke in 1981.
