This massive
ruin stands on a rock in attractive gardens that have a beehive doocot and Bowling Green.
Built by the De Vaux family around 1225, it was sieged in 1298 by Edward I. Extended by
the Halyburtons and Ruthvens, it was abandoned in 1650 following the attack by General
Monk. The castle was taken into state care and gifted to the National Trust by B.C.E.
Brooke in 1981. |
