This is one of the most important and unique sites in Scotland. Callanish is laid out in a unique formation. At it's core there is a stone circle, with an avenue or double line of stones leading north, and  single lines of stone leading east, west and south. Within the circle is a chambered cairn and central pillar-stone aligned so that the shadow of the pillar-stone penetrates the tomb at the equinoxes. Callanish is the focus of many legends, among them a belief that the stones are the petrified victims of the Druid priests.
