GLOSSARY

Blockhouse Block-shaped stone fort.
Broch A circular drystone tower, used as a fortified dwelling in the pre-Christian period.
Cairn Mound of stones, usually covering a burial chamber.
Cist A single grave, made of stone slabs.
Cross-slab Rectangular slab bearing a cross.
Cup-mark Cup shaped hollow carved into a stone.
Cup-and-ring mark Cup shaped hollow carved into a stone encircled by a carved ring.
Henge Stone circle with surrounding earthworks.
Peel tower Fortified tower-house.
Quern A stone for grinding cereal or seeds.
Runes Angular script carved into stone or wood.
Wheelhouse Iron Age house with partition walls that project inwards (like the spokes of a wheel).
