Set
in 568 acres of policies, Culzean is a magnificent Robert Adam castle of 1772-92, built
for the Earl of Cassillis. Situated on a cliff top, an older Kennedy tower house was
incorporated at the time of building. The grand circular saloon overlooks the Firth of
Clyde with magnificent views to Arran and Kintyre.
The policies contain many
walks, and other notable buildings, such as the Home Farm, which is now a visitor centre.
Culzean has been the home of
the Kennedy family since the 14th century. In 1945 the 5th Marquis
of Ailsa gifted the castle and estate to the Trust, and it quickly became its most popular
property. |
